EDISON, N.J. (February 3, 2012) - Unity Bank's Edison branch and the Rotary Club of Edison are coordinating a warm clothing drive for 40 Bhutanese refugee families that have recently relocated to the local community. Clothes can be dropped off at Unity Bank, 1746 Oak Tree Road, Edison, through February 15.
The clothing drive started on January 15 and some donors have elected to provide monetary donations in lieu of clothes. Checks made payable to the Rotary Club of Edison will also be collected by the bank for the drive.
Bhutanese refugees began arriving in the United States and other countries in 2008 as part of a United Nations resettlement effort. Bhutanese refugees of Nepalese origin have been stripped of their citizenship and forced to leave Bhutan since the 1990s as part of an ethnic cleansing program by one of the most remote and undeveloped countries in the world. Refugees arriving in the U.S. have slowly been relocated across the country.
"We strive to support the communities we serve in many different ways," said Unity Bank President James A. Hughes. "We are pleased to be able to partner with the Rotary Club of Edison on this initiative to help some of the newest residents of our community. We hope local residents will lend a hand in making this difficult transition just a bit easier."
